Inauguration of the International Training Center for Community Eye Care

The first Grass-roots Training Center for Community Eye Care in China—The International Training Center for Community Eye Care was founded in He Eye Hospital, Shenyang on April 8th, 2008. Officials from Ministry of Health, P.R. China, China Disabled Persons’ Federation, Liaoning Department of Health, Liaoning Disabled Persons’ Federation, Shenyang Health Bureau, Shenyang Disabled Persons’ Federation, Shenyang Chamber of Industry & Commerce, Shenyang Charity Federation, and Yuhong district Government attended the inauguration. Representatives from International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), ORBIS International also joined the ceremony and expressed their congratulations.
Professor Hugh Taylor, Regional Chairman for Western Pacific Region, IAPB said that the establishment of International Training Center for Community Eye Care in China indicated the Prevention of Blindness (PoB) work in China had entered into a new stage. International Training Center for Community Eye Care is not only a public eye care centre but also an integrated system including medical service，education, training and public eye care services. The director of General Division, Medical Administration Department, MoH, Gao Xuecheng and Deputy Director of Liaoning Provincial Health Bureau, Dong Degang highly praised the establishment of International Training Center for Community Eye Care.
The low-income and poor medical conditions in many remote areas have resulted in the difficulty in the PoB work. The establishment of International Training Center for Community Eye Care solved these problems by the roots. It also accelerated the service network development of rural third-class health and avoids the problem of high costs, slow effect of training talents in medical colleges. Through systematic training about basic eye care knowledge, education, eye diseases treatment and PoB, International Training Center for Community Eye Care not only can raise the basic ophthalmologic skill for rural doctors and all medical staffs but also can train ophthalmologic administrators and equipment users to meet the needs of eye care personnel in community and rural areas.
