12th May 2008, an 8-magnitude earthquake hit Sichuan province, China. People all over China and the world were shocked and affected by the horrible news. On 13th May 2008, He Eye Hospital decided to send medical teams to the worst-hit areas to provide eye care emergency services. Arrived at the disaster areas, regardless of tiredness, the medical team started rescue work immediately. On the first day, 40 patients were screened who had conjunctivitis, cataract or glaucoma and 23 ocular trauma were treated by the medical team.
During the screening, many people were diagnosed to have conjunctivitis and trachoma. Moreover, a large number of victims who had foreign bodies in their cornea had not received any treatment yet. However, the worst thing in the disaster area could be the outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis which would be very difficult to control if happened. The medical team members distributed medicine and explained the eye care knowledge to the patients promptly.
On 30th May 2008, while medical staff of He Mobile Hospital were screening patients, a wounded soldier, companied by other soldiers went into the hospital with anxiousness.
The eye was wounded by a high-heat scrap iron when the soldier was welding a pipe three days ago. The wound soon became infected. The soldier has a bad vision and great pain.

The regiment commander shook hands with Dr. He Wei firmly and kept on expressing his appreciation. Dr. He Wei was also deeply moved and said: “we all should devote ourselves to help victims during the national crisis. It’s our great honor to help soldiers who have been rescuing people’s lives here”.
