Delivery Love to 700 Miles Away, Sight-recovery in One Day for 13 Elders
--- The Prevention of Blindness Project for Minority Regions in China, by He Eye Hospital and Chinese government

The evaluation was addressed by Chen Xiqing, the undersecretary of CPC Central United Front Work Department, on the opening ceremony of Oct. 24, 2008 for “Study abroad then devote to motherland—Minority area ‘Light of Love’ sight-recovery activity”. Sponsored by CPC Central United Front Work Department, co-organized by Liaoning Provincial United Front Work Department, He Eye Hospital, this activity aims at conducting free surgery for cataract patients from minority poor area and providing free ophthalmic training for local doctors.
On Oct. 24, 2008, He Eye Hospital, CPC Central United Front Work Department and Liaoning United Front Work Department of CPC Committee jointly developed “Study abroad then devote to motherland—Minority area ‘Light of Love’ sight-recovery activity”. On the same day as the activity, 95 cataract patients from minority area recovered their sight. This activity in 2008 will mainly conduct voluntary diagnosis, screening and specialty training. Meanwhile, it will successively supplement the content of assisting minority area to develop net construction for blindness prevention and treatment, and help young people of the right age to find employment. Wang Weizhong, the standing member of Liaoning CPC Committee and the secretary of Provincial Discipline Inspection Commission, said:” this activity will play a promoting role in accelerating the development of medical career of ophthalmology in minority area, and constructing new countryside of socialism.

On Dec. 26, 2008, Gua Jianwei, the county party secretary of Horqin Left Middle Banner, donated the tablet of “Bright Envoy” to He Eye Hospital
On Dec. 25, 2008, with the guidance of He Wei (Middle), the member of CPPCC, a group of doctors and nurses from Liaoning Shenyang He Eye Hospital sent the light to 13 elders in Mongolia
From 13:13 Dec. 25 to 11:42 Dec.26, 13 elders in the Horqin Prairie, Tongliao, Mongolia, recovered their vision just within 24 hours. Boundless prairie and blue sky come into their view again.
From Dec. 24-26, 2008, with the guidance of He Wei, the member of CPPCC and president of Shenyang He Eye Hospital, around 20 doctors and nurses, for nearly 4 hours’ drive, went to Mongolia Tongliao People’s Hospital of Horqin Left Middle Banner, 700 miles away from Shenyang, to conduct voluntary diagnosis and sent the light.
Sponsored by CPC Central United Front Work Department, co-organized by CPC Liaoning Provincial United Front Work Department, CPC Mongolia Municipality United Front Work Department, He Eye Hospital and Vision Care Foundation, “Study abroad then devote to motherland—Minority area ‘Vision Care Foundation’ sight-recovery activity” was developed into Horqin Left Middle Banner of Mongolia on Dec.25th.
The opening ceremony in Liaoning area for this activity has been held in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province on Oct. 24, 2008 and 80 patients from minority area have recovered their sight. In order to send the light to over 10 cataract patients from minority area and give them a clear, relaxing and happy new year, He Eye Hospital sent 3 medical groups successively into Horqin Left Middle Banner to conduct screening and treatment.

On Dec. 26, 2008, the two elders, in seventies, underwent the cataract surgery conducted by President He Wei. After unveiling their eye shields, the elders felt very excited
On Oct.25th, just stepping out of the surgery room, He Wei said:” CPC Central Committee proposed the call of constructing a harmonious society. I, as a homecoming student, can apply the new technology overseas into the homeland construction; especially contribute into the national harmony. We have been looking forward into that. This time we came into Mongolia, resume the sight and labor for those poor population in the minority area.
He Wei decided to leave an immovable medical group in minority area. He said:” ‘Light of Love’ will cover 56 minority areas all over the country in the prospective 3 to 5 years. He Eye Hospital will not only provide the surgery, but also train the ophthalmic doctors, nurses, administrative staffs and medical equipment repairmen; if possible, they will also assist them to build a sight-recovery eye hospital.
He Wei hopes, more eye hospitals like “light of love” could appear in the minority area so that the minority people needn’t go to big city to spend a lot of money on examination and treatment.
Han Jiuyue, 75-year-old, with the left sight lost for years, said in fluent Mongolian:” I feel so excited at the news of free treatment that I couldn’t sleep for days. The surgery didn’t cause any pain.” She said that she was so old that she couldn’t move to the big municipal hospital. If Liaoning ophthalmologists didn’t come, she wouldn’t have recovered her sight. Now, she could play card with her friends.
Seeing her recovery of sight, her relatives and friends took out their mobile phones to share the good news with their distant relatives and friends.
Gao Qi, the standing member of Tongliao CPC committee and the director of United Front Work Department, said that Tongliao CPC committee, government, farmers and herders gave their kind comfort for the day-after-day and diligent work by the ophthalmologists and medical staffs from He Eye Hospital, meanwhile, expressed their sincere gratitude for the contribution made by “Light of Love” sight-recovery activity and wholehearted congratulation on those beneficiaries in this activity. Today is a wonderful and happy day for those cataract patients from Horqin Left Middle Banner.
