Record of HE Medical Team in Yemen Voluntary Activity

On January 14, 2010, an ophthalmic medical team, organized by Liaoning Health Department, set out in Shenyang, China to visit the Republic of Yemen and carried on one week international ophthalmic medical voluntary activity. The team is made up of Liaoning Department of Health and experts from He Eye Hospital.

He Wei, acquiring M.D. & PhD in Japan, is founder of He Eye Care System. Under the great danger and pressure, he insisted on leading the medical team to Yemen personally. In Yemen, he was responsible for communicating and exchanging with the government. He is the backbone of the medical team.

“On January 16, with a grateful heart, I, together with our medical team, set foot on the land of Yemen. Yemen reminds me of two decades ago, when I followed my teacher—Dr. Takao Matsui to come back to China for voluntary medical consultation for the first time. I thought, Japanese could come to China for voluntary consultation, but when the Chinese people will have access to other countries to provide free consultation. Twenty years later, I led my team out of our country, going to North Korea and Yemen. My mentor, Dr. Takao Matsui has passed away, but his humanitarian spirit passed on to me. I hope I can continue to pass on this spirit and promote it, letting more people join the bright works.”

Dr. An liangbao is the director of hospital ward in Shenyang He Eye Hospital, specializing in phacoemulsification and vitrectomy. Under various unfavorable circumstances, he perfectly completed surgeries by his wealth of experience and superb surgical skills.

"Through this trip to Yemen, I have a new understanding of our team. Thanks to our daily teamwork, we could finish surgeries successfully. As the Ambassador said, this is a trip of brightness and friendship, and also it made a crucial step in prevention of blindness in our hospital. It gave me the confidence in the future development of our hospital."

Deng Wei came to He Eye Hospital in 1999, now she is the head nurse assistant of operating room. During the surgeries, she was responsible for preparing surgical items and checking the patients, ensuring the operation success.

“When I got off the plane, I really was frightened by soldiers who carried loaded guns, but this fear was quickly diluted by the work. We are just like a big family, looking after each other even at work. I am grateful to He Eye Hospital for providing us the opportunity to do more meaningful things. As the medical care workers, we feel very honored and proud.”

Jiang Yue came to He Eye Hospital In 1996. In 2009, she attended in the medical team for voluntary program in North Korea. This time, she was again selected to Yemen medical team, which proved He Group gave the full affirmation on her work and ability. Sterilization, washing, lacrimal syringing, mydriasis, and all her works are trivial but complicated, but it is the basic for a successful surgery.

“I have a volunteer experience to North Korea, so during this preparation, I noticed more details. I have been working in He Eye Hospital for 14 years, and always been touched by patients. This time in Yemen, we enjoyed the highest courteous reception. They treated us as Allah, and I felt so proud. Although the working condition is the most difficult, we worked closely together to complete the task.”

Sun Chunhui came to He Eye Hospital in 2005, being as the nurse of operating room. She was mainly responsible for the medical device delivery to doctors. As the Yemeni patients have the different physiological structure from Chinese, she couldn’t see the other eye over their high nose; nevertheless, she assisted the surgeon successfully to complete the surgery, by her wealth of experience and good understanding.

“Although the condition in Yemen was very difficult, I am still so happy with this trip. I am extremely impressive with the local hand-kissing. At first, those people rushed at us, I felt lost as I did not know what they were going to do, but when they came in front of us, and then gently kissed our hands, I knew that the hand-kissing is the local supreme courteous reception. It made me deeply feel that when we help them solve the problem, our value is also recognized.”
